Grass hay vs alfalfa: the amino acid difference

Alfalfa generally carries more protein and more of the key amino acids lysine and methionine than most grass hays, so pound for pound it does supply more of what a horse needs to build muscle, coat, and hoof. But switching to alfalfa isn't a guaranteed fix, because amino acid levels vary a lot from cutting to cutting, and even good alfalfa can leave gaps depending on how much your horse actually eats. Good horse care starts with knowing what your hay does and doesn't provide.

Does good hay provide enough amino acids for horses?

This is the question we hear most, and the honest answer is: sometimes, and sometimes not. Equine nutrition and health rest on more than crude protein. A feed tag or hay report might show a respectable protein number, but that number doesn't tell you whether the *quality* of that protein is any good.

Protein is made of amino acids, and horses need certain ones from their diet because they can't make them on their own. Lysine is usually the first one to run short, which is why it's called the first limiting amino acid. When lysine is low, your horse can't fully use the rest of the protein, no matter how high that crude protein number looks. That shortfall shows up in horse coats, hair, and hooves before it shows up anywhere else.

How do grass hay and alfalfa actually compare?

Here's the general picture, keeping in mind every bale is a little different:

Grass hay

Timothy, orchard, brome, and other grass hays tend to run lower in protein, often in the 8 to 12 percent range, and lower in lysine and methionine. They're a fine base for many horses, especially easy keepers, but they lean on the shortfall side for amino acids.

Alfalfa

Alfalfa usually runs 15 to 20 percent protein with more lysine and methionine per pound. That's why it's popular for growing foals, hard-working horses, and animals trying to gain weight.

The catch is variation. A late-cut, stemmy alfalfa can test far lower than a leafy early cut. And unless you send a sample off for a real hay analysis, you're guessing. Two bales from the same field can differ enough to matter.

Why isn't switching hay always the fix I hoped for?

Say your horse has a dull coat and a weak topline, and someone tells you to add alfalfa. It might help. But it might also mean more calories than an easy keeper needs, more calcium than balances well with your other feed, or richness that doesn't suit a metabolic horse. You've solved for protein and created a new problem.
